This yoga ball is 65cm, a medium ball, perfect for my height and the height of my desk. Every hour or so I switch my chair for the ball. Sitting on the ball helps keep good posture. There is no slouching while sitting on this ball, and less pressure build up on the lower back. Sitting on the ball also strengthens the core, just the way it does when you use it while exercising. The balancing and keeping of your posture “silently” work on your core. I, of course, take my yoga ball sitting a bit further and subtly work my core a little more while working on menus by doing twists, leaning back, leg raises etc... Who says you can’t burn calories and strengthen your core while you work?! I also take the opportunity while making the “seat switch” to get up and move. Maybe throw in a few standing leg lifts or squats in between, certainly a few stretches.
Being sedentary for prolonged periods of time is detrimental to our health and to our bodies. Just because you work a desk job doesn’t mean your body has to stay sitting in one position for 8+ hours a day. Take a walk during your 15 minute break, take a loop around the office or building when you refill your water, bring a yoga ball to work (your boss certainly won’t provide you with one). Do what you can to keep the blood flowing and your body moving. Weight gain should not be the price you pay for gaining a pay check, and you shouldn’t allow the gain to begin (and its never too late to start a work routine either!).
People may think it’s weird at first, bringing in a yoga ball to sit on at your desk, but they soon think it’s a great idea…and some may even join you! I waited about a month at my new job before I pumped my ball up and got to it. Yeah, some people laughed but some people said now they need one. More importantly, I’m feeling better about my long days. Put your health and happiness first, no matter where you are. There’s no shame in keeping fit while you sit!
