Maca has been known to naturally boost energy (without the jitters, anxiety or a crash…cough, caffeine, cough), stamina, fertility, the immune system and memory while aiding the body in dealing with stress. It has been used for centuries to naturally enhance athletic performance. Maca is known for its ability to balance the body’s endocrine system. Many women use it for hormone imbalance (The main reason I started using it…worked like a charm!). It is also used for treatment of osteoporosis, anemia, chronic fatigue and even depression. A little added bonus: Maca has been shown to increase libedo (let the love flow!).
Maca has a malty flavor….kind of like the center of a malted milk ball (and you can make natural, raw, healthy ones using cacao and Maca…I’ve done it, its amazing). This flavor is not everyone’s favorite, but it can be easily hidden when Maca is added to things. I put a tsp of Maca in my smoothie every single day and I do not drink coffee. I’ve never had to! So…Maca can be used in smoothies, in baking, in combination with chocolate, in making healthy desserts, mixed into yogurts or cereal. Oh the possibilities, oh the greatness you’ll feel.
One of my favorite brands of Maca is Navita’s Naturals. It's much more affordable and you get a lot more. I was lucky enough to get a free bottle of “Whole World Botanicals” Royal Maca to try while working at Whole Foods (oh the perks of working for a natural grocery store, oh how I miss them). This tiny bottle has a much more concentrated Maca powder which means a tiny amount packs a big ole punch. It may be a better Maca, but it is much more expensive. If it wasn’t free, I probably would have never tried it. Get what’s right for you and your budget and enjoy the benefits. Who knows, you may even kick that coffee habit!
