When Yoga Girl....ok Rachel Brathen started to blow up on the social media scene I wondered if I should move on (I always tend to hate when something I am into becomes a thing) and unfollow. The truth is, I just couldn’t. I really didn’t want to. As weird as it sounds I felt like I knew this girl and her story and wanted to know how it ended up. Then the book talk began. I told myself I wasn’t going to hop on the bandwagon and get the book. Then a friend that I had gotten into Yoga Girl asked if I wanted to go to her book signing in Connecticut. I said yes. I mean, I have been following this girls journey for the past 3 1/2 years, it would be cool to meet her and read what she wrote. So I went.
I got out of work early to drive from Western Massachusetts to the middle of nowhere Connecticut. I felt so out of my element (and not just because the event took place in a creepy church...yes, churches freak me out). I am NOT a fan girl and the room was packed with them. Oh how they screamed and cried (like, tears....real ones) and took pictures when she walked in the room. It was all very weird to me. Everyone lined up to have their book signed, get a hug, and share a few words with this inspiring yoga goddess.
When I got up there I let my friend go first and talk it up and hug it out. I had planned to just get my book signed, smile and peace out but to my surprise, Rachel came up to me and hugged me. Such a warm, welcoming, genuine hug that totally caught me off guard. She said she loved my mandalla tattoo and how beautiful they were. She wants to name her new yoga studio mandalla and I said, maybe I’ll make it out there for some yoga. And that was that. I must say though, her vibrations were very welcoming and bursting with positivity.
So now I am happy to read the book, and I do, and its wonderful. It is a brightly colored, happy little wonder full of pictures (my kinda book is chuck full of pictures), life stories, positive insight, recipes, yoga moves, meditation tips and so much more. I honestly felt so very happy and just plain good when I was reading this. Perfect for being wrapped on in a blanket on the couch with a cup of tea, outside in the sunshine with a glass of sangria or on the go, its the perfect easy read that gets you deeper into the life of this yoga icon and into your own being. A very real, feel good real that will keep you healthy in the long run.
For those just starting out with yoga (like myself) this book is full of yoga tips and tricks and great sequenced pictures with descriptions below them of different flows and poses. I see myself referring back to this book to strengthen my yoga game and try new poses. I am also hoping it will help me get over my fear on inversions and get me upside down successfully without breaking my neck!
If you are into feeling good, positive vibes, real life stories, healthy lifestyle, yoga, meditation and good food I strongly suggest picking up this book and giving it a read. I have a feeling it will be one you reference again and again.
My recent experience and read was a positive one and certainly an eye opener as well. As I have since 2012, I hope to someday take one of Rachel’s yoga classes. I also hope to get some real time conversation with her (one that isn’t filtered by a book store employee, in a church or surrounded by fan girls) to get some more insight and inspiration on so many things. If you haven’t yet, check out Yoga Girl by Rachel Brathen. Your soul will thank you.
